Pinnaplasty
Pinnaplasty, also known as ear correction surgery or otoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape or reposition the ears. It aims to correct prominent, asymmetrical, or misshapen ears by adjusting the cartilage structure. The result is a more balanced and natural appearance that harmonises with the rest of the face.
Pinnaplasty is recommended for individuals who feel self-conscious about ear prominence, ear projection, or irregular ear shape. It is suitable for both adults and children whose ears have fully developed (usually around age 5–6). The procedure is ideal for those seeking to improve facial balance and enhance overall confidence.
Although pinnaplasty can be performed in adulthood, it is often carried out during childhood once ear growth is complete. There is no strict upper-age limit as long as the patient is in good health. The key consideration is the maturity of the ear cartilage and the individual’s overall health.
During the procedure, an incision is usually made behind the ear, allowing access to the cartilage. The cartilage may be reshaped, folded, or repositioned to achieve the desired contour and reduce prominence. Excess skin may also be removed.
This incision results in a scar that is typically hidden in the natural crease behind the ear, making it very discreet once healed.
Pinnaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age, comfort, and individual needs. Children typically undergo general anesthesia for safety.
The procedure usually takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the complexity of the correction required.
Most pinnaplasty procedures are performed as outpatient surgeries, allowing you or your child to return home on the same day.
Pinnaplasty is carried out in hospitals in Greater London that adhere to strict sterilization standards and provide well-equipped surgical facilities, ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout the procedure.
Recovery is generally straightforward. Most patients can return to school or work within a week. A protective dressing or headband may be required during the initial healing period to support the new ear position. Swelling and mild discomfort are expected in the first days and improve gradually over the following weeks.
Post-operative care includes keeping the surgical area clean, wearing the recommended headband as instructed, avoiding sleeping on the operated side during early recovery, and refraining from strenuous activities or contact sports until cleared. Following all guidance ensures proper healing and long-lasting results.
The first step is to schedule a consultation. During this appointment, I will examine the ear structure, discuss your concerns, and determine whether pinnaplasty is the appropriate approach. I will also explain expected outcomes and all procedural details.
Following UK Medical Council recommendations, healthy individuals without significant medical conditions usually do not require pre-operative tests for pinnaplasty. Additional exams may be requested based on personal medical history.
The cost of pinnaplasty varies depending on the complexity of the case, anesthesia used, and other individual factors. Fees typically include hospital costs, anesthetist’s fees, surgeon’s fees, and the nursing team’s support.
On average, prices range from £3,000 to £5,500. During your consultation, you will receive a personalised quote based on your specific needs.
